NSW Government Department of Communities and Justice:

Project Director - Natalie Walker

In 2020, NSW Department of Communities and Justice engaged Inside Policy to evaluate the Youth Koorii Court (YKC). The YKC operates in the Children’s Court at Parramatta and Surry Hills.

To deliver the project, the Inside Policy used an Aboriginal ethnographic approach that considered the cultural environment and cultural support staff participants. This approach ensured consideration of cultural values and outcomes when assessing the effectiveness of the program.

The following activities were undertaken during the project:

  • co-designing of the YKC program logic and evaluation plan

  • mixed-method data collection approach including court observations, semi-structured interviews, document review, file review, administrative and financial data review, case studies, journey mapping

  • delivery of a final report with recommendations and findings to inform the future delivery and funding of the program.
