#InvestForGood speaking tour... it's a wrap!

From 23-27 March 2015, Inside Policy, Qantas and Indigenous Business Australia led a series of conversations designed to amplify impact investment efforts in Australia. The #InvestForGood speaking tour featured global impact investment expert and investor Amb. John Simon (ret.) founder of Total Impact Capital.

Amb. Simon is founder and Managing Partner at Total Impact Capital, a world leading impact investment firm who works with investors and enterprises seeking to create positive social impacts as well as strong financial returns. Before Total Impact Capital, Amb Simon was a visiting fellow at the Centre for Global Development, where he co-authored More than Money, a report on impact investing as a development tool. Previously, he held a variety of posts including the

Impact investing is a growing field of investment that intentionally creates positive social or environmental impact as well as a financial return, and measures both.

 

Amb.Simon often describes impact investments as those that offer more than 0 per cent financial return plus a social and / or environmental impact.

United States Ambassador to the African Union and the Executive Vice President of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). Ambassador Simon also served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Relief, Stabilization, and Development for the National Security Council at the White House, the first to hold this post.  From 2002 to 2003, Ambassador Simon was Deputy Assistant Administrator at the United States Agency for International Development. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Business Finance and Strategic Planning at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Executive Office for Administration and Finance in several capacities, including Deputy Director for Research and Development.

It's been estimated that the gap between the demand for services and what governments can provide will widen to approximately $68 billion, or 3 per cent of GDP by 2025.

 

So how will that gap be filled? Could it be by charities and other philanthropic ventures?

 

They will play a big part - but experts say they won't be able to shoulder all the burden.

 

There is, however, one potential solution that has emerged in recent years called 'impact investing', which seeks to foster social enterprises that deliver a financial return.
